E-bike Technology Explored: What’s Included In Trek Allant+, Domane+ and Rail?

E-bike Technology Explored: What’s Included In Trek Allant+, Domane+ and Rail?

There’s an e-bike out there for everyone. With electric assist models now accounting for one in every three bikes sold in the UK, it’s clear they’re here to stay. Trek offer e-bikes across the board, from lightweight city hybrids to sleek road machines to burly mountain bikes, and you can take your pick from 13 Trek e-bike lines totalling more than 120 individual bikes - with 20 of these in store at Cycle Technology in Wakefield, and some ready to take home and demo for the weekend!

We’ve picked out three of these ranges - Allant+, Domane+ and Rail - for a closer look and to explain the technology that helps them elevate your riding experience.

The Powerful e-Hybrid: Trek Allant+

Trek Allant + 7

The Trek Allant+ is an e-hybrid that appeals to urban commuters seeking a reliable, comfortable and efficient experience. With its upright sitting position and practical features such as mudguards, lights and racks, it's perfect for navigating city streets with ease. Recreational riders looking for a capable e-bike for weekend adventures will also appreciate its versatility and performance, with front suspension to soak up those bumps along the way.

The Trek Allant+ combines sleek design with powerful performance. Equipped with the Bosch Performance Line CX motor, delivering 85Nm of torque, this e-bike offers smooth and responsive power assistance, effortlessly tackling hills and long commutes. It’s essentially a wolf in sheep’s clothing, with the kind of power normally seen on brawny e-MTBs like Trek Rail (see below) but on a bike aimed at people who want a comfortable, leisurely experience.

The integrated Bosch PowerTube battery ensures a clean and streamlined look to the frame while providing ample range for extended rides. We find the Allant+ is especially popular with “range seekers” - people who like to cover plenty of miles on their rides - or those with “range anxiety”, the fear of running out of juice a long way from home. The Allant+ comes with a battery of up to 725Wh and many models are compatible with Bosch Range Boost, an extra battery that keeps you riding even longer.

Trek Allant+ features a full-colour handlebar-mounted Bosch Kiox controller which shows ride info, connects with your Bluetooth enabled devices and has a built-in theft prevention immobiliser feature. The easy-to-read display tells you which assist mode you’re in, your heart rate, speed and - most important of all - how much battery you’ve got left.

The range: The Allant+ goes from the entry level Allant+ 5 at £3,100 up to the Allant+ 9.9 at £5,800.

The Comfortable Road E-bike: Trek Domane+

Trek Domane+ AL 5

The Trek Domane+ caters to endurance cyclists and avid riders who prioritise long-distance comfort and performance. Whether you’re tackling epic climbs or embarking on all-day adventures, this e-bike offers a perfect blend of power and efficiency.

The Trek Domane+ redefines endurance riding with its advanced technology and performance-oriented design. Featuring the TQ harmonic pin ring electric motor, this e-bike offers customisable electric assistance, allowing riders to fine-tune their experience based on terrain and riding preferences.

As this is still a road bike, and keeping weight down is a priority, the motor is small and subtle, compared to the Allant+ and Rail, fitting nicely into the Domane+ frame design. It offers 50Nm of torque delivered smoothly, naturally and quietly, too! While high-capacity batteries like the Bosch PowerTube 750Wh weigh more than 4kg, Trek’s 360Wh integrated battery on the Domane+ comes in at just over 1.8kg. If you do want that extra capacity for longer rides, Domane+ is compatible with a range extender which fits conveniently into the bottle cage.

The Domane+ range comes with a simple controller which is integrated into the top tube. However, the TQ HPR computer connects to the Trek Central app for real-time range calculations, activity tracking and customised motor tuning. Plus, navigation and mapping features help you stay on course wherever you ride.

The range: Trek Domane+ begins with the Domane+ AL 5 at £3,050 and runs to the Domane+ SLR 9 AXS from £11,500.

The Mountain Machine: Trek Rail

Trek Rail 9 Gen 3

The Trek Rail is tailored for adventurous mountain bikers who crave adrenaline-fuelled rides on challenging trails. Whether conquering steep climbs or descending gnarly singletracks, this e-MTB offers unmatched performance and capability.

Trek Rail is powered by the Bosch Performance Line CX motor with 85Nm of torque and integrated PowerTube battery, offering robust power delivery and long-lasting battery life, ensuring uninterrupted fun on the trails. The level of assist can be adjusted on the fly via the controller, from the Turbo setting for challenging climbs, Eco for battery preservation and Walk Assist to help when you’re marching uphill.

The range comes with 160mm of travel on the front suspension and 150mm on the rear, providing confidence-inspiring stability and control, allowing riders to tackle technical descents with ease.

The newer “Gen 4” models feature the 750Wh battery, which gives you roughly an hour more riding compared to the previous 625Wh battery. Every model in Gen 4 also comes with Bosch’s Smart System, which connects the drive unit, battery, display and control unit through the eBike Flow app. It also means you can easily upgrade to a Kiox controller if you like a bit more information and customisability in your display.

The range: Trek Rail starts at the Rail 5 625 Watt, currently on sale for £3,795, and runs to theRail 9.9 XX1 AXS Gen 4 at £12,950, currently on sale for £8,495.00!

So that’s our pick of three ranges to demonstrate the breadth and versatility of Trek’s e-bike line-up. However, there are many more variations, with lighter e-hybrids, those more comfortable on varied terrain and e-MTBs that are more agile and natural-feeling. Come and see us in-store in Calder Vale Road, Wakefield, to find out which Trek e-bike could be right for you.
